Bitvavo account after a death
Bitvavo's official procedure for the account of a deceased customer: required documents, how the payout works, and what to expect.
Bitvavo has an official procedure for the account of a deceased customer. According to the current procedure, the account itself cannot be taken over; the remaining funds can be transferred to a bank account or a verified Bitvavo account. It is a documentation procedure run by Bitvavo itself, and nothing about it requires technical wallet skills.
How it works
- Establish that the account exists. Emails from Bitvavo, bank transfers to Bitvavo, or the app on a device are typical evidence; the full search method is in how to find someone’s crypto after they passed away.
- Contact Bitvavo’s official support (the official link under ‘Sources and useful links’, typed by you, never clicked from a message). Ask to speak to an employee and explain the situation; the team guides you through the process.
- Provide the documents Bitvavo asks for. Bitvavo’s current published requirements include: the death certificate; a declaration of inheritance that confirms who is entitled to act (in the Netherlands this is the verklaring van erfrecht); a photo of a valid passport or ID card of the heir; a photo of the deceased person’s passport or ID card (if available); the email address the deceased person used for Bitvavo; and one payout option: your IBAN or the email address of your own Bitvavo account. If documents are not in English, German or Dutch, Bitvavo asks for a certified English translation.
- Verification and payout. Bitvavo verifies that the deceased person held an account, confirms the rightful heir on the basis of the declaration of inheritance, and reviews the documents. It then transfers the balance to the chosen option: your IBAN or your verified Bitvavo account (your identity and IBAN must then be verified).
- Confirmation. After the transfer, you receive a balance overview based on the date of death, a transaction history of the account, and confirmation that the account has been closed.
If a notary office handles the inheritance
Bitvavo requires the same documentation, including a declaration of inheritance confirming the notary’s authority. If that authority is not stated explicitly, Bitvavo cannot share information or process the request.
What heirs should know
- No beneficiary designation exists. It is not possible to name a beneficiary on a Bitvavo account in advance; succession runs through the estate process.
- Do not log into the account without lawful authority if it is not clear that you are entitled to do so. This can create legal, security or evidence problems and may breach the provider’s terms. Use the platform’s official estate procedure.
- Never share your login details, passwords or codes with anyone, including people claiming to “help” with the claim. Bitvavo never needs your password or codes for an estate payout.
- Verify every contact. Use only the official support URL, typed by you. Impersonation of exchange support is common around estates.
- Requirements can differ per case and jurisdiction. Bitvavo’s official help center is the authoritative source; check it for your situation before sending documents.
What this page is not
This page does not bypass Bitvavo’s process and does not offer paid services. The official procedure is the route. If authority over the estate is not yet confirmed, start there first: legal authority vs technical access. For the general exchange picture, see exchange accounts after a death.
Quick answers to common questions
Can we take over the deceased person's Bitvavo account?
No. According to Bitvavo's current procedure, a deceased user's account cannot be taken over. The remaining balance can be transferred to a bank account or a verified Bitvavo account.
What if there are multiple heirs?
Bitvavo can pay out the funds to one heir only (one IBAN or one Bitvavo account). The heirs must distribute the funds among themselves after the transfer.
When will we know the balance of the deceased person's account?
Bitvavo provides a balance overview and transaction history once the documents are verified and the request is processed. The overview reflects the account on the date of death; the actual euro amount paid out depends on the value on the day of the transfer.
What if we do not want or cannot create a Bitvavo account?
You can request a direct payout to an IBAN instead. If the deceased person's bank account is closed, the funds can be transferred to the heir's bank account or to an executor, trustee or notary handling the inheritance.
