Official channels and source verification

The official websites of the main exchanges, hardware wallets and software wallets, and which old wallets are discontinued with no safe official download.

Always first check that you are using the official channel of the wallet or exchange. Note: an official web address does not mean you have to enter your recovery words or a private key there. Use secret recovery material only when the official recovery or import procedure of your specific wallet explicitly requires it, and check in advance where that entry should take place. This page lists the official websites of the main exchanges, hardware wallets and software wallets, and it says clearly which old wallets are discontinued and have no safe official download. The rule is always the same: type the address yourself, never click a link from a message, an email, a search ad or an app-store result you cannot verify.

The one rule

A genuine website can be a place to read instructions, without you ever having to enter your recovery words there. Verify not just the site, but also the action: type the official address yourself and then check in the official documentation that the step you want to perform really belongs to that wallet. If in doubt, do not enter recovery words or private keys. Lookalike domains are common, for example “ledger-secure.com” instead of “ledger.com”. If you are not certain, enter nothing and ask someone you trust.

Coinbase Wallet / Base App. The Base network itself continues to run; Coinbase only discontinued the legacy “classic” version of the Coinbase Wallet app on 15 August 2026. Opening the old app now leads to a mandatory transition to the new Base app (Base mode). Not all networks or assets from the classic wallet are supported or displayed there. If you find an old Coinbase Wallet, first determine which assets and networks were used, then follow the current official Coinbase instructions before any recovery or migration step. A balance not shown in the new app does not automatically mean the assets no longer exist.

Discontinued wallets and tools

WalletStatusWhat to do
MultiBit / MultiBit HDDiscontinued since 2017, no reliable official downloadDo not download “MultiBit” from random websites, app stores, messages or search ads; fake copies are common. Work with someone who has verified experience with old wallets
BRD (Breadwallet)Discontinued, no longer in official storesRestore with the recovery phrase in compatible software; do not download “BRD” from random sites
ArmoryLegacy wallet; original commercial development ended, open-source project continued by the communityCheck current status, releases and compatibility only via the official project channels; for old Armory wallets, do not automatically use an arbitrary old build — preserve all wallet files first and determine which version or recovery route fits the found wallet
Old Electrum versionsNo longer currentUse Electrum only through Electrum’s official channel and follow the currently supported upgrade, migration or recovery route. Do not automatically assume that an old wallet file needs a historical Electrum version. Preserve the original wallet file unchanged and work on a copy only for research or conversion.
Toast WalletDiscontinued, removed from app stores; no active official downloadToast used an encrypted wallet backup alongside a passphrase and a six-word recovery phrase; the recovery words are not a wallet backup by themselves. Preserve all found Toast material separately and unchanged, and determine the correct recovery route only afterwards
Jaxx / Jaxx LibertyDiscontinued 27 March 2023 (Decentral), no official supportPreserve the backup phrase; restore via compatible software you verified yourself; do not update the old app
Samourai WalletThe original Samourai domain was seized by authorities in 2024 and is no longer an operational support or download channel; do not use it for downloads or recoveryNever visit the old site again; restore only with software you verified yourself
CopayDiscontinued, BitPay now offers the BitPay Wallet instead; no reliable official download of Copay itselfPreserve the backup phrase; restore only via compatible software you verified yourself; never download “Copay” from random sites
HiveDiscontinued; no active official downloadPreserve all found Hive material unchanged, including wallet files, backups, any recovery words and passwords. Hive existed in different variants with different recovery methods. Therefore first establish which Hive version was used before choosing a recovery route; do not download random software posing as Hive.

What this list is not

This list is for verification, not endorsement. It is not exhaustive, and official domains can change. Always confirm on the site itself that you are where you intend to be, check the address bar before entering anything. For the estate rules behind each wallet or exchange, see the wallet format library and exchange accounts after a death. This page is not legal, tax or technical advice.
